Each test isolates a system attribute. Use when comparing streamers/endpoints, dialing speaker placement and sub crossover, or evaluating DAC/transport noise floor and microdynamics. **System context:** Sources are turntable + Roon Nucleus core → local library on a NAS (hi-res + CD-quality FLAC) → endpoint → Hegel H390 (DAC). Amp/speakers (H390 + Magnepan LRS+) and headphones (Arya Stealth, Clear MG) are already reference-level, so Tier 2 is a spotlight on the **digital front end / transport**. Differences here show up as space, ease, and removal of glare — not tonal shifts. ## The tests ### 🎯 Center image lock / vocal focus - Norah Jones — *Don't Know Why* - Adele — *Hello* Listen for: vocal dead center, no halo/blur, breath + proximity audible. On the Magnepan LRS+ this should feel like a phantom center speaker. Fails → speaker positioning/toe-in, or streamer jitter. ### 🔪 Treble smoothness / sibilance control - Diana Krall — *Temptation* - Billie Eilish — *bad guy* Listen for: "S" sounds sharp vs silky, cymbals shimmer vs splash, no fatigue at moderate volume. The Focal Clear MG exposes this brutally. Fails → DAC/streamer harshness, or room reflections. ### 🕳️ Black background / noise floor - Nils Frahm — *Says* - Max Richter — *On the Nature of Daylight* Listen for: silence between notes = true black not gray, microdynamics from nothing, natural reverb decay. Where a better streamer becomes obvious. Fails → digital noise floor, or power/grounding. ### 🧵 Microdetail / low-level resolution - Patricia Barber — *Company* - Nick Drake — *Pink Moon* Listen for: finger movement on strings, room cues/echoes, vocal texture (grain vs smooth). The Arya Stealth should excel here. Fails → source-resolution bottleneck (transport). ### ⚖️ Macrodynamics / impact scaling - Hans Zimmer — *Why So Serious?* (3:25 drop) - Daft Punk — *Giorgio by Moroder* Listen for: effortless quiet→explosive transition, no peak compression, bass impact without distortion. The Hegel H390 should dominate. Fails → amp headroom (unlikely) or source choking dynamics. ### 🧱 Layer separation (dense mixes) - Radiohead — *Everything In Its Right Place* - Nine Inch Nails — *The Day the World Went Away* Listen for: each layer distinct, no collapse into a wall, spatial separation holds under load. Killer test for streamer + DAC quality. ### 🎛️ Bass texture (not just depth) - James Blake — *Limit to Your Love* - Trentemøller — *Chameleon* Listen for: distinguish notes in sub-bass, texture vs rumble, clean decay with no overhang. Exposes REL T7x integration immediately. ### 🧪 Timing coherence / PRaT (advanced) - Snarky Puppy — *Shofukan* - Vulfpeck — *Dean Town* Listen for: toe-tap factor, ensemble tightness, bass + drums locked together. "Off" → streamer timing or system coherence. ## Quick routines **10-minute system-change check:** 1. *Don't Know Why* → center lock 2. *Temptation* → treble sanity 3. *Says* → noise floor 4. *Limit to Your Love* → bass control **Instant streamer A/B (4 tracks):** - Nils Frahm — *Says* → noise-floor jump - Steely Dan — *Babylon Sisters* → separation + treble smoothness - Radiohead — *Everything In Its Right Place* → layering - James Blake — *Limit to Your Love* → bass control ## Analog vs digital cross-reference A test most people miss — use overlapping material to baseline the vinyl chain against the digital chain: - Miles Davis — *So What* - Fleetwood Mac — *Gold Dust Woman* - Nick Drake — *Pink Moon* | Attribute | Vinyl likely wins | Digital should win | |---|---|---| | Timbre / realism | ✅ | | | Texture | ✅ | | | Noise floor | | ✅ | | Imaging precision | | ✅ | | Bass control | | ✅ | If digital loses across the board → the endpoint is the bottleneck. ## Streamer upgrade: Lumin U2 Mini (decided) Replacing the Naim (retired) with the **Lumin U2 Mini** as a pure Roon transport into the H390. Rationale: no DAC needed (H390 has a strong one), excellent RAAT implementation for Roon + local files, clean digital handoff is what matters most. **Hookup:** Coax (SPDIF) into the Hegel H390 — Hegel's DAC is optimized around SPDIF, coax from Lumin is excellent, simpler/more stable than USB in this pairing. A good $75–$150 coax cable is plenty. **Setup tweaks:** - Roon: confirm Roon Ready endpoint; enable Exclusive mode + bit-perfect (no DSP initially). - Lumin app: disable volume control (fixed output); leave digital output at default. - Network: wired Ethernet only, no Wi-Fi for this device. **Expected gains (subtle, not night-and-day):** more stable/locked-in center image, deeper stage, better layer separation, tighter bass articulation, less digital edge — "everything snaps into focus and relaxes at the same time." ## Next bottlenecks (if going further) Speaker positioning / room treatment → REL T7x crossover tuning → eventually a speaker upgrade above the LRS+.
